Sumo Oranges Round 2

Yup its that time of year again. Sumo time! Immediately upon getting back from our trip we went straight to Whole Foods and bought a few (okay A LOT) as I think they are pretty much going out of season already :( We checked right before we left as they would have made amazing road trip food but alas they weren't at the stores yet.

Anyway we've eaten a ton the past few days and are savoring the few we have left :) I had to go back and see the post from last year, The Bubb is so small!! But he loves loves loves them as he can actually eat them this year. If you can still find them I would definitely go and try and get a few before they are gone. Writing this post has now made me hungry for one...hope everyone is having a good Leap Year Day.

Away We Go

We decided to take a somewhat impromptu vacation these past few weeks. And the whole thing came together really well, considering that we planned it about 2.5 weeks before we left! We've now been all over the southwest...California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Yes that is right we DROVE to Texas. Crazy right? Well with our spur of the moment decision, airline prices were too high and thinking about spending two full days (1 there, 1 back) in an airport, on BART, and on the plane with a very active 17 month old it just didn't appeal to me. So for better or worse we decided to drive.

{ This is a very picture heavy post }

Snow on the Grapevine in the LA area

Austin Texas cityscape

Texas shapped waffles?!!! How cool is this? (or maybe I am just behind in my waffle shape knowledge)

Driving down Congress Street

Austin has fantastic food and wonderful house prices. Could be our new future home? Not sure. Unfortunately we didn't get too many pictures, just busy I guess and sorta forgot. Meet up with friends and had just a lovely time.

Along the way we also stopped at the Grand Canyon

And the rim had snow on it so that was awesome!

And because it was the "off" season, there were hardly any people and we got to drive and park in the section that is now shuttle bus only. Which was incredibly handy when having a baby along.

The Bubb was in good spirits the whole time and loved loved loved playing with the rocks. It was so exciting for him that it got him to powernap inbetween stops.

We often get asked, how do you travel with a baby? with staying in hotels, camping, etc. First The Bubb is a trooper. He did FANTASTIC in the car. Especially since it was typically 6-10 hours days of driving. We start very very early in the morning like 5-6 am and then drive as long as he will put up with it until breakfast. Then we feed him, get gas, etc. Then we drive until lunch, same thing and then the last stop is the hotel. We usually only have to stop once other than the 2 times for breakfast and lunch if he just has had too much drink and has peed way too much and needs his diaper changed. We use overnights for the car and have snacks, books, and small toys for him to play with the entire time. And are constantly changing them up for him.

For us anyway, the less stopping the more used to it he gets. As the more we stop the less he wants to get back in the car. We also give him milk every time we have to strap him back in because he is so thrilled that he gets additional milk that he could care less that we've put him back in the carseat. We also face him forward and on the side so he can look out the front and side windows.

For hotels, we usually stay in hotels that have "rooms". Sometimes it is just a half wall separating the front room from the bedroom and sometimes it is door or a hallway, as seen below.

A couple of times we all shared the same room, which meant we had to go to bed at 7:30 and use Evan's laptop with headphones until we went to sleep. And it definitely wasn't the most ideal situation but it worked.

We are very much hoping that he will continue to be a good traveler as I really want to go to Iceland.

Anyway, we stayed at this wonderful hotel by the Colorado River that had a pool and backyard area that Emmett loved. He ran around and splashed in the pool for about an hour. It was fantastic.

We also drove through Death Valley, which I definitely recommend seeing in the winter as opposed to summer.

Emmett loved his sun glasses (I think that they are absolutely adorable on him so there are a lot of pictures of them). He was also fascinated by the salt.

Emmett also got his seventh tooth along the way and we now have some chewed board books. Oh well! But now it is back home, to work, etc. Emmett has transitioned remarkably well back to California time, so that is fantastic! Hope everyone has had a good past couple of weeks! And is it weird to say that I've actually missed sewing. I am trying very hard to make time to get some projects done to share! We'll see how the week unfolds. But for now it is laundry, laundry, laundry.

Putt Puff Puttedy Chuff

These are Emmett's favorite books. We read them ALL the time. He has been stuck on this group for the past month or so. And he does vary month to month, week to week, but it has been pretty consistent as of late. Not that I mind.

So this is what we are reading right now: Otis, Go Dog Go, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Bear Snores On, My First Tractor Book, Trucks, The Foot Book, The Going to Bed Book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Trucks (yes there are 2 truck books), and Trains.

Once he gets you cornered in his room or on the couch he will bring them all over to you and just keep handing them to you until we've read through them all then we have to start all over again. Sometimes we get stuck on Otis, as there is this one page in it with a firetruck and he will just stare at it for like 10 minutes babbling to himself.

But I love that he is so into his books. He'll walk around with them or just pull one of the shelf and be content for 10-15 minutes. It is so nice...not just from a hey my kid loves to read, but also, yeah! I have 15 minutes, what can I do? Brush my teeth, comb my hair? eat something perhaps?

I am interested to know what are your kid's favorites? We are always on the lookout for new books to try out!

Pezzy Prints

When I got home today I was so very excited to see two quite large boxes sitting at my doorstep!! Pezzy Prints are finally here!! Yeah! (okay I am little too excited, but I have been waiting for these for what seems like forever).

They come in solid colors (above) and in mixed colorways (below). So fantastic!

If interested :) you can find them HERE in my shop.

Hope everyone is having a good end of the week! This totally made my day :)

Crayon Hearts

I got this idea over at Martha Stewart to make hearts with melted crayons and wax paper so that when hung up the light will shine through them. I thought it seemed pretty fun and thought I would share how I did them.

I picked out the crayon colors that I liked best, as I didn't want all red, so I did red/pink, yellow/orange and of course PURPLE. I grouped my colors then peeled the paper off.

Then I started using a pencil sharpener to make the shavings (as they suggested) and it didn't work, so I just took the crayon sharpener out of the box and used that instead and it worked much better.

From there you just put the crayon shavings inbetween two layers of wax paper. I just used a long sheet and folded in half. Then I spread the wax shavings around a bit in the middle and pinched up the edges.

Next you just iron away. I would strongly suggest using an old iron or as I like to call mine, my craft iron. I also put a piece of scrap fabric under the wax paper and on top of the wax paper while ironing. While you can't see the wax melting this way, it totally saved both my ironing board and my iron as the fabric was completely speckled with color afterwards.

I ended up with this after ironing, wax paper with melted crayons inside :)

At this point the options are limitless. I cut out hearts as I am trying to become a valentine supporter, or at least in decorating as I still don't like the hallmark holiday. I found that I couldn't fold the wax paper in half without making weird wax creases so I ended up free scissoring my hearts which I think are fun in themselves as they don't match and aren't super girly/valentining being all oddball.

I experimented with three different ways of hanging them up. First we strung all the yellow/orange hearts onto one piece of fishing line (and they totally stayed in place!) and hung them in the Bubb's winow.

Then we (the bubb, babo, and I) hung them one at a time in the dining room window.

And lastly we did the stick them to the window with double sided tape on the stationary window of the sliding door, just out of The Bubb's reach.

I like that I can see the one's in his room through the window blinds.

But this whole project also showed me that I need to wash our windows! Or maybe the HOA needs to get people to come and wash the windows outside :)
